TAYLOR VETS

A Safe and Cosy Christmas for Your Pets

Christmas is such a lovely time of year to share with our pets. There are new smells, new visitors, plenty of excitement, and often a few tempting treats within paw’s reach. With a little planning, you can keep the festivities safe, relaxed, and enjoyable for every member of the family.

Here are the key things to look out for over the holidays, along with a few simple, pet-friendly recipes you can make at home.

Festive Foods to Avoid

Many favourite Christmas foods are completely off limits for pets. The biggest hazards include:

Chocolate – All types are dangerous, especially dark chocolate. Even small amounts can cause serious illness in dogs and cats.
Grapes, raisins, sultanas and currants – This includes mince pies, Christmas cake, Christmas pudding, stollen, and panettone. These can cause kidney failure, even in tiny amounts.
Onions, garlic, leeks and shallots – Common in stuffing, gravy and leftovers. These can damage red blood cells, leading to anaemia.
Leftover bones – Cooked bones can splinter easily and cause choking or internal damage.
Alcohol – Even a small sip of a spilt drink can be harmful.

Decorations and Household Hazards

Christmas brings extra sparkle, but a few items need extra care.

Christmas trees – Tree needles can irritate paws and mouths. Cats may also see the tree as a climbing challenge, so secure it firmly.
Tinsel and ribbon – These look like toys but can cause dangerous blockages if eaten.
Fairy lights – Chewing wires can lead to electric shocks. Keep cables tucked away.
Candles – Never leave pets alone in a room with open flames.
Snow globes – Many imported versions contain antifreeze, which is highly toxic.
If you think your pet has eaten something they shouldn’t, call us straightaway. Our out of hours emergency service runs throughout the festive season, so there is always someone here to help.

Visitors and Routine Changes

Our homes can become busy over Christmas. Some pets take this in their stride, while others need a little support.

Try creating a calm, quiet space where your dog or cat can retreat if they feel overwhelmed. Stick to familiar routines as much as possible, and keep an eye on open doors so no one slips out unnoticed during arrivals or goodbyes.

If your pet struggles with noise or changes in routine, let us know. We can offer advice tailored to their needs.

Safe and Simple Christmas Treats

Safe and Simple Christmas Treats

Homemade treats are a lovely way to include your pet in the celebrations safely. Here are a couple of easy recipes using everyday ingredients.

Turkey & Sweet Potato Bites (for dogs)

Ingredients:

• Small handful of cooked turkey breast (plain, no skin, no seasoning)

• Half a cooked sweet potato

• 1 egg

• 1 tablespoon oat flour or blended gluten free oats

Method:

Mash the sweet potato, add the turkey, egg and oats, and mix well. Roll into small balls and bake at 160°C for 12–15 minutes until firm. Cool completely before serving.

Tuna & Cranberry Stars (for cats)

Ingredients:

• 1 tin tuna in spring water (drained)

• 1 egg

• 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh cranberries

Method:

Blend everything together, press into small silicone moulds or create little patties, and bake at 150°C for 10–12 minutes. Cool fully and store in the fridge for up to three days. Use treats in moderation, and always check ingredients suit your pet’s dietary needs.
