We are now requesting that all of our imported patients are tested for Brucellosis.

With increasing numbers of animals entering the UK from abroad, we have seen a rise in infectious diseases not commonly encountered here. This decision follows guidance from the government and veterinary specialists, underscoring the importance of monitoring for this condition in imported pets.

What is Brucellosis?
Brucellosis is a bacterial infection that can be transmitted from animals to humans.
Why is Brucellosis a risk to humans, and why is testing so important?
Brucellosis can lead to fever, lethargy, headaches, back pain, and physical weakness. In severe cases, it can affect the central nervous system and heart. Additionally, it has been linked to reproductive issues, including abortion and infertility.
You’ve seen my dog before without testing - why the change now?
With an increase in pets traveling internationally, UK veterinary practices are encountering diseases they haven’t seen previously. As the number of Brucella cases rises, we are adopting updated guidelines and expect other practices will follow. Many already require testing, and we are implementing this policy as part of a growing trend in proactive care.
My dog has been here for years; why do I still need to test?
Brucellosis can remain dormant for years, so even long-term residents can be carriers without showing symptoms. To ensure health and safety, testing is recommended regardless of how long ago a pet was imported.
Does my pet need testing if they only travel abroad occasionally?
Generally, no. The risk remains low for pets traveling briefly, especially as close contact with stray or unvaccinated animals poses the highest risk of infection.
What if I decline testing for my dog?
In that case, our staff will wear protective clothing while handling your pet, with an additional charge per visit. If your pet requires surgery, we will require a test beforehand, as the risk of spreading Brucellosis increases in surgical settings.
My dog has already been tested. Is that sufficient?
If your dog has already undergone Brucellosis testing, please provide a copy of the lab results for our records. Note that Brucellosis testing is specific and is not included in standard blood panels.
What if my dog tests positive?
Although Brucella cases remain low, the recommendation after a positive result is euthanasia due to the significant health risks it poses to humans, other pets, and to prevent your dog’s suffering as the disease progresses. We understand this may cause anxiety around testing, but it is crucial to protect public health. Alternatively, stringent isolation measures are an option; further information on this is available via the PDSA.
What is the cost for testing?
The Brucella test costs £177, which includes taking a blood sample and sending it to a laboratory for testing.
My dog struggles with blood being taken. What can we do?
We can provide an anti-anxiety medication, trazodone, ahead of the appointment to help your dog relax. If additional sedation is required, we can discuss options or plan to take the sample during a future sedation if needed. Until then, our staff will wear protective gear when handling your dog.
Are other diseases tested in imported pets?
Yes, imported pets may be at risk for other serious diseases not commonly found in the UK, though these are not typically transmissible to humans. Testing can be arranged using the same blood sample as the Brucella test; please let us know if you would like more information.
