Primary Care Service
Chickens have very different health needs from cats and dogs, and it is not always easy to know where to turn when one becomes unwell. Here at Towcester we are experienced in caring for chickens and welcome individual pet hens and cockerels, as well as birds kept in small backyard flocks.
Chickens often hide signs of illness, so even a small change in their usual behaviour can mean something is wrong. If your chicken seems quieter than normal, stops eating or drinking, separates herself from the flock or simply does not seem like herself, it is worth arranging an appointment.
When should your chickens see a vet?
We can help with a wide range of chicken health concerns, including:
- Changes in appetite or weight
- Unusual or watery droppings
- Breathing difficulties, coughing or sneezing
- Lameness, swollen feet or problems walking
- Wounds and other injuries
- Feather loss, itching, mites and lice
- Worms and other parasites
- Problems with the crop
- Changes in egg laying
- Soft-shelled eggs or difficulty laying
- Swelling around the eyes, face or abdomen
- Changes in behaviour
- A general decline in health
If more than one bird in your flock is affected, please let us know when you book. This can help our vets understand whether there may be a wider problem.
Routine Health Checks and Advice
You do not need to wait until your chicken becomes unwell to bring her to see us. We also offer routine health checks and practical advice to help you keep your chickens healthy.
Our vets can help with questions about feeding, parasite prevention, introducing new birds and the general health of a small flock. We will consider your chickens, their environment and how they are kept before recommending the most appropriate next steps.
Bringing your Chicken to the practice
Please bring your chicken in a secure, well-ventilated carrier or box, with a towel or other non-slip material on the bottom. Keeping the carrier partly covered may help your chicken remain calm during the journey, while still allowing plenty of ventilation.
It can also be useful to bring:
- A fresh sample of droppings, if relevant
- Details of any recent treatments or parasite products
- Information about changes in feeding or egg laying
- Photographs of the coop, run or any other affected birds
- Details of when you first noticed the problem
